Every region has its own arts and crafts. And the province of Lecce is a land with an ancient tradition of handicrafts: engravers, potters, inlayers, papier-mâché makers, toy makers, basket makers, weavers, not to mention coppersmiths and coopers. Each hand-crafted piece always passes on the talent of its maker and above all the tenacious industriousness matured over several generations. A mere description of materials, processes and techniques is not enough to convey their full, vital essence, which has its roots in the region’s ancient folk traditions.
Alongside papier-mâché and Lecce stonework, terracotta is an equally well-known local speciality. As for wrought iron, the Baroque tradition had and continues to have an influence on the craft, which is focused mainly on making home furniture and furnishing accessories.
Breadbaskets, shopping baskets, doormats, containers for fruit and fresh ricotta are the result of the skilled weaving of bulrushes and marsh cane. But in the Salento people also twist yarns of cotton, wool and hemp to create carpets and fabrics decorated in all sorts of ways. Anyone who adores lace will also find plenty of splendid examples all over the region.
